Create your Backyard Getaway

One of the neat things about a backyard getaway is it doesn’t have to cost a lot, and it is a great idea for homeowners and renters alike. Best of all, you don’t have to be an expert “Do It Yourselfer” to get it done. When you are finished you have a great space perfect for winding down in the evening and a fun place to hang out with family and friends.

We had a spot in our back yard that needed something. We used to have a fish pond there but two things happened. First, a big heron stopped by and made a smorgasbord meal out of the fish that lived there and second, our toddle daughter wanted nothing more than to go swimming in the pond.

Fearing the consequences of that, we removed the pond. Now left with a big dirt patch, what to do, what to do?

We decided a nice fire pit would be fun. We laid a patio down using pavers, created a base for the firepit, then used wall stones, stone caps, and a grate to build the firepit. We added a few chairs and voila, our backyard getaway was born! Over time we have added more pavers to increase the number of chairs that fit around the fire pit.

We’ve added a table that can hold drinks, snacks and even a TV, perfect for after-dark outings under the stars. This simple backyard getaway has turned into one of the most used “rooms” in our house.

Here are a few more ideas for creating a backyard getaway:

Make sure there is plenty of seating: A deep seating set or some lounge chairs can go a long way in creating a space that you actually want to hang out in. You could even add a hammock for maximum relaxation.

Create some shade: The easiest way to do this is to add an umbrella. You could also create a gazebo, awning, or plant some trees.

Add a hot tub: With a hot tub, you can relax in your yard all year-round.

Use all the benefits of landscaping: Add some plants, trees or shrubs with height for a little bit of privacy. Consider adding some flowering plants to add some fragrance. Add potted plants to your patio or sitting area so you can enjoy the plants as you relax.

Yard games, anyone? If you're tired of sitting around and just relaxing…try playing a few yard games. Croquet, badminton, cornhole, and bocce ball are a few games to consider.

Don’t forget the lighting: Lighting can go a long way in setting the mood, plus it will allow you to enjoy your yard after the sun sets.
